Chloramine as a Water Disinfectant

A lot of research and studies had been attempted on the ill effects of chloramines when used as a disinfectant. Still, there are no definite rulings to date whether it’s completely safe or not.

The EPA notes: “Chloramines have been used by water utilities for almost 90 years, and their use is closely regulated. More than one in five Americans uses drinking water treated with chloramines. Water that contains chloramines and meets EPA regulatory standards is safe to use for drinking, cooking, bathing and other household uses.”

This is in response to complaints to water companies who switched from chlorine to chloramines. Health issues ranges from respiratory, digestive to skin problems. “Experts” still rule that these are isolated cases and more likely attributed to allergic reactions on few individuals but many municipal water customers disagree.

More and more municipal systems are using chloramines. It is believed that chloramine is more stable than chlorine, therefore more likely to reach your house without disipating. However is is not as effictive at killing bacteria as is chlorine.

Others are complaining about the fact that the switch to a chloramine disinfectant should have been made public the moment it was put to use. Only when complications started to happen did they realize about the switch.

For many years the usual disinfectant used was chlorine. Based on studies conducted, it was observed that while chlorine does not react with pure water to have any negative health effects, organics present in the water prior to treatment, react with chlorine creating byproducts (THMs) which are carcinogenic. Though a rare event according to experts, it was the main reason for them to consider chloramines instead.

Few water filters are effective at removing chloramines.  It is up to consumers to do something about it, especially for those who are known to have a reaction to this chemical.  If a water filter is compliant with the NSF Standard 42 for the removal of Chlorine, that does not mean it will be effective for Chloramine reduction.  The challenge is choosing the one that is tested and certified according to NSF Standard 42 specifically for the reduction of Chloramine.

These days water contaminants are the kind you can’t see – toxic chemicals causing cancer, birth defects, infertility, and more. I’m relieved to know I’m now protecting my family’s health because we use state-of-the-art water filtration by Selecto Inc., made right here in the USA. RV water filters

The first known RV was first used in France back in 1800’s. It has since evolved from practical use to high end luxury. Like the Gray Nomads of Australia, a lot of Americans spend time to camp out with their RV’s and for some, as a semi-permanent home. Back then, RV living was the cheaper alternative, but nowadays it’s slowly becoming a choice even for those who could afford regular homes.

Early RV’s are basically used for sleeping and supplies storage. As they got bigger and more advanced, all parts of a home are represented in an RV fashion. This came to a point that there is nothing unusual with an RV having a built-in garage for an ATV and sometimes even for a small sized car.

The usual challenge for someone owning an RV is the maintenance and operational cost entailed. One good example is the RV’s freshwater supply. This is an important aspect if you plan to use it for several days, and especially for some who use it as their home. Traveling cross country means having a water supply sourced from different wells or local providers.

While a lot of effort is in place to maintain tap water quality, more and more complaints are still coming in from different communities regarding a number of health issues attributed to their water supply. The RV is no exception like any other home. Safe and clean water is still a priority.

Most RV-ready filters are similar to home filters but with less equipment add-ons as much as possible since space is limited. It is a good thing to note that back then, RV’s need to store as much water from a known source. If they ran out, the next option would be to purchase bottled water types or simply trust the quality of the local tap of their current location.

The advantage of these RV filters is the convenience of having treated water even for non-drinking use. Since filters are themselves efficient on treating water, bottled water purchases are not necessary. The cleaner the water, regardless of the use, the safer we are from any allergic reaction or bacterial infection.

Not all RV filters are built-in types. One example is the PureCool filter from Ezclearwater filters which only requires a 5-gallon plastic bottle to function as a filtered water dispenser. One advantage of these portable types aside from the lesser cost is the convenience of being able to use it on top of a picnic table away from the RV. This is perfect for smaller RV’s mostly used by campers all over the country.

There’s no substitute for the quality time spent with the family going on outdoor trips. We just have to make sure that any risk related to health is well covered with the right equipment and preparation.
