Altrazine And Your Water!

The Environmental Protection Agency today reversed its stance on the potential hazards of atrazine, one of the most commonly-used herbicides in the country, saying it will re-examine how the chemical affects human health.

In my opinion, this is just another reason that you need to take your own precautions as to your family’s health. Anything that is ingested needs to be reviewed or vetted before you provide it for your family.

In September, a published article in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives examining more than 100 scientific studies of the weed-killer. They concluded that the chemical affected the developmental, behavioral, immune, hormone, and reproductive systems of aquatic animals.

Metal contaminants in our drinking water

It is a known fact that metals naturally occur on any natural freshwater source. Our bodies through ages of adaptation had evolved to naturally render them harmless and some are even considered as micronutrients in small amounts like copper.

The body could absorb about 1,000 ug(micrograms) of copper a day. However any amount beyond that may cause vomiting, diarrhea, stomach aches, and nausea. Unless contamination is caused by pollution, any naturally occurring amounts of copper on our water source is acceptable.

Certain heavy metals like Mercury are considered toxic even at small amounts. Health effects are usually related to brain damage resulting to memory loss and hallucinations. It could also result to other diseases like, Acrodynia (pink disease), Hunter-Russell syndrome, and Minamata disease. Mercury contamination of natural water sources in central California caused by abandoned mercury mines has affected at least 100,000 residents. These abandoned mercury mines had been closed for more than two decades now. Only recently that studies have confirmed the higher body levels of mercury on local Indians who rely on natural water sources.

Like mercury, lead also damages the nervous system. Earliest evidence of lead artifacts date back 6400 B.C. Lead has a long list of industrial use, notably for car batteries and semiconductor applications. Its wide use makes it a potential pollutant once these items are discarded improperly. Water pollution through solid and industrial wastes is the main cause of lead contamination. Indications of lead poisoning may vary but has been observed to be related to stunted growth, learning disabilities, and anti-social behaviors of children. In general, lead poisoning effects tend to be long term and irreversible.

Another notorious metalloid found in drinking water is the arsenic. First studied in 1250 by Albertus Magnus, it is widely used for wood treatment due to its toxicity to wood insects. Its poisonous reputation had made it a favorite tool for murder mystery tales. Throughout history, a lot of famous victims including Napoleon himself allegedly died of arsenic poisoning. Although naturally occurring on 200 types of mineral species, most groundwater contaminations are caused by mining, smelting of non-ferrous metals and burning of fossil fuels. When ingested through drinking water and depending on the dosage, symptoms may vary from skin disease, hearing loss, diabetes and cancer.

These are just some of the metals that are naturally present on ground water. As long as the acceptable levels are achieved, none of the harmful symptoms would occur. Protecting our drinking water at home should be a primary objective for all.

Reverse Osmosis For Your Home is Expensive

Reverse Osmosis systems are known to be used best for desalinating water. It is a trusted process employed by a lot of industries to treat their cooling systems. Since the advent of home based filters, the reverse osmosis system had also been used to filter water even for our drinking consumption.

The process of reverse osmosis is pretty simple. A semi permeable membrane acts as a filter to choose only what type of substance it would let pass through and water is constantly forced through it by pumps. Bacteria and other contaminants are left out and only clean water is allowed to pass. Anything the semi permeable membrane would reject would be discarded as waste water.

Osmosis was likened to it as reversed because in natural osmosis the less salty water separated by a semi permeable membrane is pushed by the osmotic pressure to go to the saltier water to attempt to even out their concentrations.

This osmotic force is duplicated by pumps and instead of less concentration to more concentration; the reverse osmosis does it the other way. The more concentrated water is assumed to be the untreated or contaminated water and pushed to the semi permeable membrane to become less concentrated or free of impurities.

The process of reverse osmosis is efficient and effective if the natural way of the process is duplicated to perfection.

This is where the problem arises. All the process involved with reverse osmosis including the electric pumps and constant flowing untreated water requires power and resources. The artificial semi permeable membrane needs to be replaced on regular basis. The filtering capability is only as good as how the semi permeable membrane was made for. In many cases, reverse osmosis would even block out healthy minerals needed by our bodies.

Reverse osmosis also wastes water. On the average, only about 15%-25% of the processed water could be consumed. The remaining are discarded as waste water.

Your house pipelines could also be compromised. Since reverse osmosis produces acidic water and acid eats up metal, it may aid in pipeline corrosion.

After considering the inefficiency in operating power, the water wastage, the expensive maintenance, tasteless water stripped of all minerals, and the disintegration of your house pipeline structure, one should have careful consideration before using reverse osmosis as a house filter.

Water Softener or Water Filter?

Water, the substance we depend on for survival; odorless, colorless and tasteless yet fundamental to the survival of all life. Water will dissolve nearly everything it comes in contact with and carries that with it. Knowing that our water supply is safe is important and knowing potential problems with the water coming into our home and how to make our water safer and better for us is equally important.

There are a number of potential problems that can occur with the water that comes into our homes; high levels of calcium, minerals and sediment, otherwise known as hard water. Hard water can be really difficult on your home’s plumbing and appliances and for many years people would turn to water softeners that use salt to lessen the harmful effects of hard water.
Unsafe water is another problem we face with our water today. Water with bacteria, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and carcinogens are in large numbers in the public and well water systems. It is common for people to install under sink water filters to provide safe and filtered drinking water. Often the best drinking water filters are installed to remove as many contaminates as possible. This takes care of just the drinking portion of the water we use every day.

Some water softener companies are adding filters to their salt source water softening systems and going door to door selling them and promoting them as home water filtration systems. They unfortunately are not full spectrum filters that will fully protect the home from the vast array of contaminates in the water. Further more, these systems use salt to ‘soften’ the water which is very damaging to the environment and can cause additional health concerns above the water contaminates the ‘filter’ does not catch.
Homes that need a way of softening the water as well as wishing to find security in their water that a whole house water filtration system provides will often be disappointed by the choices they face. A nano-filtration system offers both, a salt free water softener as well as a full spectrum whole house water filtration.

A water filter to remove lead, remove arsenic from water and remove chloramines is combined with a softening system that does not use salt or chemicals. These systems are suited for well water, river water, and even public utilities water and are environmentally safe.

Feel confident that all the water that is used in your home is safe and treated. By filtering and treating the entire house you can feel confident that the water used to wash clothing and dishes is safe. The water your children bathe in and play in is free of harmful bacteria, viruses, pharmaceuticals and carcinogens from the detergents added to the water. Safe water and soft water can be had; be careful of the door to door sales that try to convince you that their salt water softener with a water filter will protect you.

Contamination from tap water pipelines

Water tap providers are regulated by the government to comply to health standards before they could operate. In response, they make sure that they only use the approved amounts of cleaning chemicals like chloramines, chlorine, and fluorine. This treated water is then distributed by pipeline infrastructure to our homes.

Though the level of water purity may be acceptable as soon as water leaves the treatment plant, a lot of times, contamination may happen on the long pipe journey to reach our homes.

Lead poisoning is a common problem partly caused by pipeline contamination. Lead is used in many pipe connecting lines. The soldering joints to copper pipes are also sources of lead that dissolves in water. Usually if water sits in a pipe for six hours, it would contain a higher amount of lead if your pipeline uses lead pipes or fittings.

Since 1986, Congress has regulated the amount of lead used on pipes, faucets or any pipe fittings that would need the use of lead solder. For the lead solder, not more than 0.2% is allowed, while on lead pipes and faucets, not more than 8%.

Lead was a preferred choice back in late 19th century and early 20th century. Not until the negative health effects had been documented, it was widely used throughout the states.

Rusting is a major cause of leaks. Once a pipeline is leaked, microorganisms may combine with the water. Other natural minerals may also leak in amounts of harmful metals like mercury and arsenic, depending on where the pipes pass through. Rust is formed by the reaction oxygen and iron when exposed to water or air. The flaking on the surface of contact would eventually lead to pipe disintegration.

For the most part, lead pipes had been replaced with copper or iron nowadays. Rust proofing had been improved with modern methods. The sad reality is that there are still reports of lead contamination every now and then due to unchecked lead levels on our water tap. We could always rely that the government is doing its job to regulate and check compliance of water providers. But we should also consider that it would be difficult to make sure regulations are followed to the letter all the time. The better way to deal with it is to make sure that protection would start the moment water flows in our homes through commercial home water filters systems.

These days water contaminants are the kind you can’t see – toxic chemicals causing cancer, birth defects, infertility, and more. I’m relieved to know I’m now protecting my family’s health because we use state-of-the-art water filtration by Selecto Inc., made right here in the USA.
