Healthy Living? My Funny Experience Buying a “Water Filter”

It all began with a phone call asking me what grocery store I use. Some jovial man was going to give me a coupon worth $25 for that store! Hey, who doesn’t want a free $25 bucks these days? But wait…there’s more free stuff! I’m also getting a free water test and my coupon will be delivered in person. Cool. Funny thing though. All this free stuff could only be delivered if both my husband and I were home. Hmmm…

The night for our free coupon and test came and there was a knock on the door. This nice man came charging in carrying a large kit of some sort and charged right into the kitchen. Right away, he told us he was definitely NOT a filter salesman – he was a water quality technician. In no time he had everything set up all across my countertops. There was a small “filter” of some sort attached to my faucet so that he could run water through either it or my regular tap. The kit was open with lots of bottles – empty and full, and he had a large three ring binder open in front of us.

He methodically went through page by page of the binder explaining many of the problems with what comes out of my tap, always referring to it as, “Raw, untreated water” as if there is no municipal water facility in my town at all. Of course we already knew about these problems, and for the most part what he said was true. But we didn’t interrupt; we wanted to hear his routine. He told us how his “filter” had cured him of lifelong skin conditions and that was why he went to work for the company. He said the filter would clean itself, so we’d never have to so much as replace the media inside – just add more blocks of salt.

For the most part, we let him do his thing, but when he showed us all the symbols of all the institutions that certify their products I took notice. Everything was there: the ANSI, NSF, Water Quality Association, everything you could think of. So I asked him, “To what standard does the NSF certify these filters?” It was pretty hard not to laugh when he gave me the answer, “All of them!”

Well that was a little bold to say the least, so I had to press on saying, “Well… I know some of the standards are for different types of filters, so isn’t there some standard that applies to these filters?”

His reply, “Well all of them apply, but that doesn’t matter. Nobody knows what all that stuff means anyway.”

Keeping a straight face at that point was a bit challenging, but I managed. I don’t know if he caught the look my husband and I passed to each other.

As time passed, he put dye in this bottle and potassium hydroxide in that one. He washed a glass, and rinsed a washcloth in a bowl, always repeating the mantra: “Raw untreated water” as he explained. When the demo was over he asked if we had any questions, so I tried again. “So exactly what contaminants does this filter remove?”

“Everything,” he replied.

“Really? What about fluoride? I know fluoride is hard to remove.” I said.

“Yes, everything.”

Eventually our nice guest began to pack up his kit without attempting to sell us anything. I waited. He packed. So I figured I’d take the bait. After all, the sale was coming some time and he’d already been in my kitchen a couple of hours. I didn’t want to make it three. “So if somebody wanted one of these, what do they cost?”

Needless to say, the more I baulked, the lower the price – from a total of $8738.70 down to the original $6995.00 – no tax, free installation. Then he went on to the payment plan where the price and interest rate didn’t really matter, just the monthly payment I could make from all the savings I’d see from reduced costs of soap. In the process, I learn that if I really wanted clean water I’d also get the Under-the-sink filter to go with the big boy. That small, shiny silver thing really looked pretty. It must be worth the extra thousand smackers added onto the bill!

I wrote down the model numbers to look up later. Sure enough, this “filter” that removes “everything” was a salt-brine water softener. Nothing more. If I were depending on that system to keep my family and me SAFE, all I can say is, it’s a good thing that what comes out of my faucet is not “Raw, untreated water!”

I didn’t get the coupon that night either, though about a week later I did get a letter in the mail with a web address where I could download one myself.

These days water contaminants are the kind you can’t see – toxic chemicals causing cancer, birth defects, infertility, and more. I’m relieved to know I’m now protecting my family’s health because we use state-of-the-art water filtration by Selecto Inc., made right here in the USA. Salt water intrusion affects our water supply…

In 1988, a paper published by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicted the possible roundup of debris on stable areas of the Pacific due to global wave patterns. Charles Moore, an ocean researcher, confirmed its existence in 1997 when he came across vast areas of Pacific waters with unusually high concentration of plastic debris. Since then the Pacific Garbage Patch became a global concern.

The Pacific garbage patch is estimated to be as large as 5%-7% of the whole Pacific ocean and grows at an alarming rate. Studies conducted found a large concentration of plastic particulates on the water samples. These are not seen by the naked eye and plastics do not degrade easily they just disintegrate up to molecular level while retaining their polymer structure. Think of it as fine powdered plastic which seemed to dissolve in water but still remains plastic.

We may think that this is far from our homes but we must also consider the fact that the Earth has 97% salt water and just 3% fresh water. On the 3% fresh water only 1% is available for drinking and human consumption. No matter how we try to prevent it, there are still risks that salt water may combine with our water source especially on coastal areas.

The water cycle involves creating freshwater from vapor through precipitation on land. Millennia of this cycle have created fresh water bodies inland. Aquifers are rocks or any semi-permeable substance that isolate debris and other impurities on fresh water which is accessed through wells and streams. In effect, it’s nature’s way of making sure we drink fresh water.

However there are limitations on how effective these aquifers could function. Overuse of groundwater prevents the natural replenishment of aquifers effectively destroying them. Nowadays, saltwater intrusion on groundwater is becoming a problem for coastal communities.

Global warming is slowly causing the rise of sea level. The rise of sea level is directly proportional to the worsening of salt water intrusion. This was best observed when Hurricane Katrina swept large amounts of saltwater on coastal lands. Agricultural yield and soil productivity were largely affected.

We are not sure yet how much worse has the salt water breached the aquifers. The long term effects are not yet defined. But this is what we know, the Pacific garbage patch is not improving and there will come a time that our water source might have plastic particulates which are relatively toxic and are even considered carcinogens due to the leaching of BPA on the water. For now, let’s just do our best to protect what our families drink and eat by using commercial house filters and living a healthy lifestyle.

Are You Allergic to your Water tap?

It may seem odd but there such a thing a being allergic to water. This is a special type of water, the type that flowed in to approximately 265 households near Charleston, W.Va. They used it for shower, cooking, and drinking. Only recently they realized that their flowing tap has high levels of contaminants. After comparing notes with neighbors, they were surprised that a lot of them had common skin allergies and other types of skin burns. They all blamed it on nearby coal companies. Lawyers are currently working on a formal complaint against these alleged violators.

A sad reality to note is these things happen with fact that we have all the means to detect and regulate dangerous chemicals from being used alongside our water source. Unchecked violations are mounting through the years, which is also directly proportional to the environmental and population health damaging effects. All you need to do is dig through government archives. The word carcinogen, which refers to cancer causing substances, is alarmingly linked nowadays to our drinking supply. Although this would not be the case decades ago but it may also be possible that it’s just now that those affected are being heard. Still, the government is having a hard time with strict implementations because huge businesses are involved and laws are not yet fully defined to be applicable for new industrial processes.

The only temporary way to protect ourselves immediately is to be careful with what we eat and drink. The water filter industry for households was born due to that need of having access to safe drinking water at home. Of course, having an alternative solution at home doesn’t mean that violators could go ahead and pollute our water source. At least while the government takes its sweet time to find a way to track down and impose sanctions on violators, we have an option to protect our families.

Water to lose weight?

Let’s assume that you are currently in the process of shifting to a healthy lifestyle. You jog at least a mile every morning, did away with those candies, sleep at least 8 hours a day, and of course eating just right. It may seem odd but recent studies show that water could actually help lose weight. Well, it’s not like you need to lace it with some fat burning substance or dissolve pills that takes away your appetite. There is but one simple rule, you drink it. Of course it may sound a bit silly, you drink everyday anyway so what else do you need to with it? This is how it works, instead of consuming amounts of SSB (sugar-sweetened-beverage) you substitute water for it. Now that’s easy.

Researchers from Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health and the Harvard School of Public Health conducted a study. They concluded that in two days, for ages 2-19 up to 235 excess calories are gained from these SSB’s or any sweetened liquid beverage. By simply drinking water in place of them you are indirectly losing by not gaining any. In a different perspective, according to an expert, a 15 yr old boy would have to jog for 30 minutes just to lose the calories from one can of soda. Imagine doing that for all sodas that you may consume in a day. How many non-water beverage do we consume for a day? A week? A month? Think of the total excess calories that we should’ve avoided. Even without the calorie loss benefits, the savings from refraining from SSB’s should also be taken into consideration. An active lifestyle is still the most effective option but not all have the time for it. Now consider this, we pay so much just to stay fit. In reality we are just paying to lose what we shouldn’t have gained to begin with.

EPA Couldn’t Prove Contamination Yet Due to “Trade Secrets”….

EPA Couldn’t Prove Contamination Yet Due to “Trade Secrets”….

Residents of Pavillion, a ranching town in Wyoming, are having a hard time trying to determine if their drinking water is safe or not. EnCana a Canadian drilling company is currently on the hot seat of debates whether they have caused the adamantanes and 2-BE contamination based on the initial EPA findings. The company maintains that it is almost virtually impossible that their “hydraulic fracturing” fluids would reach the aquifers and contaminate ground water. This would have been resolved in a much faster pace if not for the fact that the EPA had no idea what exactly they’re looking for. The chemicals and other industrial compounds used for the hydraulic fracturing are protected trade secrets. Residents are furious especially because some complaints date back 15 years. Although the company expressed willingness to provide the EPA a list of chemicals used, it may just be a start of a long and tedious process which may involve some policy changes. A good thing to note is that somehow were making progress.

If these would indeed turn up something, then the hydraulic fracturing process which was first used back in 1903 may need some form of upgrade. Further government funded research is badly needed. This is also similarly beneficial for oil well drilling companies on the possibility that the process in question may not have anything to do with the contamination. It may be a long shot to get a concrete solution about this issue immediately but as water contamination is a global concern, technologies like filters and water treatments may be the only things that could come handy these days.
