In a new study, researcher Julian Andelman, of the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public
Health, the National Academy of Sciences has shown that volatile
chemicals present in many municipal drinking water supplies are
especially toxic to people when they are exposed to them when bathing or
showering.

If
Your Water is Disinfected with Chlorine:
Chlorine is an effective disinfectant but produces toxic disinfection by-products such
as THMs (TTHMs) which are now known to cause birth defects and cancers.
Up to 93% Higher Cancer rates are
found in people who drink and bathe in chlorinated water than people
who do not. Bladder, breast and bowel cancer as well as
malignant melanoma are increased.
Chlorinated water contains
chemical compounds called trihalomethanes (THMs or TTHMs) which are
carcinogens. We store them in the fatty tissues of the body like
breast, other fatty areas, mother's milk, blood and semen.
Suppress
immune system function.
Aggravates asthma, bronchitis,
and emphysema.
Causes cell
damage
Triggers the
production of Free Radicals
It is not uncommon for chronic
skin conditions like acne, psoriasis, seborrhea and eczema to clear up
or to be significantly improved after chlorine exposure is eliminated.
American Journal
of Public Health links chlorine to increases in certain types of
cancer, skin irritations and asthma and stated that "up to 2/3 of the
harmful exposure was due to skin absorption and inhalation of chlorine
in shower water."

If
Your Water is Disinfected with Chloramine
(80%Chlorine plus 20% Ammonia):
Chloramines, on the other hand, have not been adequately studied
for human health effects and are known to kill fish, harm dialysis
patients, and cause birth defects and cancers in some mice. More
research is needed. People with sensitive skin are experiencing such
reactions as painful skin rashes and horrid scaling on their scalp.
There are also disinfection
byproducts from the use of Chloramine. They are less known but
that does not mean they are safer.
Chloramine
IS known to corrode gaskets in
plumbing and appliances, and turn stainless steel gray, making whole house filtration a necessity.
Another unexpected problem with the use of Chloramine is that it is
causing Lead to leach from the solder in copper pipes.
New homes with copper pipes are soldered with lead free solder, but this is
a problem in older homes.
