Polycarbonate uses BPA (bisphenol-A) in its production.  (You will know a plastic has BPA if its recycle symbol has #7)

BPA mimics the natural female sex hormone estradiol.  In animal research it has been linked to female reproductive disorders, breast and prostate cancer, and attention and developmental problems.  Endocrine disrupting chemical like BPA are responsible for male fish having eggs and female fish having "male parts"  as well as anomalies like frogs with 6 legs.  Even a couple of weeks of using (unheated) polycarbonate bottles will cause BPA levels to rise significantly in humans.

PET bottles contain no BPAs.  Even if BPA is in some of the plastics recycled to produce PET bottles, it is removed in the production process. 

PET contains no plasticizers that migrate out of the plastic and into the environment.

PET bottles are made from recycled plastics and are themselves recyclable.  That's always a plus for the environment, and therefore for You who live and breathe in this environment.  We realize that won't directly make people recycle, but it's a move in the right direction.  The more people USE recycled products, the more they might become inspired to recycle, realizing there is a market for recycled plastics.  (Sometimes PET's next incarnation is to become your carpet.)

In the event PET bottles are tossed instead of recycled, PET can be incinerated without emitting toxins into the air.  Unlike other plastics, PET contains no chlorine or dioxins.
